Dr. Jan Walker and Mira Vyas writing for Teachers Evaluating Educational Multimedia
October 2003
This is an excellent piece of software. It provides comprehensive and interactive support for the Programme of Study for National Curriculum Key Stage 4 Sc3 Materials and their Properties. The program can be used equally well as a tool to augment whole-class teaching and as an invaluable resource for individual students for revision and private study.
The animations, simulations and pictures which illustrate topics are designed to stimulate interest and curiosity about Chemistry, and provide a number of learning experiences not easily achieved by other means. There are limitations to the program's use with lower-ability students.
The software was used as a revision exercise to help consolidate learning in the classroom and to prepare the students for their forthcoming mock examinations. Since the students were already familiar with the material, I wanted to see how effective the software was in reinforcing key concepts and testing understanding.
It is a good resource for an independent learning lesson, particularly if you feel you need a lesson in which you can speak to individuals as they work rather than the whole class. Students worked in pairs and were keen to discuss ideas and share their expertise with one another. Students enjoyed using the software and they found the animations and graphics clear, interesting and informative.
In summary, this is a very useful addition to a Science department's resources.
