We are having problems running our Absorb software on service pack 2 for XP. Can you help?

Window XP Service Pack 2 significantly changes the way web based content is managed. By default it blocks all 'active content'. This includes the JavaScript that is essential for the Absorb products to function. It also adds a rigorous popup blocker which again interferes with the operation of certain aspects of the Absorb products.

There are two main workarounds for these problems:

Before following these solutions, read the Service Pack 2 documentation to understand the implications.

Solution 1: Enable active content on the local machine. This will allow any Absorb products installed on the local machine to operate as before.

  1. Navigate to 'Start Menu' -> 'Settings' -> 'Control Panel'
  2. Click on 'Network and Internet Connections'
  3. Open 'Internet Options'
  4. Select the Advanced tab
  5. Scroll to the 'Security' section
  6. Tick the box 'Allow active content to run in files on My Computer'

Note: This option may only be available to administrators, depending on the setup of your network and workstations.

Solution 2: Allow blocked content on a page by page basis using the Information Bar.

  1. When the Information Bar indicates that it has blocked content
  2. Click on the text 'Click here for options' to the right end of the Information Bar
  3. Select 'What's the risk?' and read the information provided before continuing
  4. Select 'Allow Blocked Content'
  5. In the resulting dialog, indicate that you wish to continue
  6. The Absorb page should now function as normal

Note: This process may need to be performed on several pages;

  • The 'Welcome' page displayed when the Absorb shortcut is first opened
  • The 'Contents' page
  • When viewing a media item in fullscreen mode

This process will need to be repeated every time the software is opened.
